Mike and Ike (salt and pepper shakers; jelly candy)
“Mike and Ike (They Look Alike)” is the name of a comic strip by Rube Golberg that premiered in the San Francisco (CA) Bulletin on September 29, 1907. “Mike and Ike” (or “the twins”) became a diner slang nickname for salt and pepper shakers by at least 1936; this slang is not used today.
Just Born, Inc. introduced “Mike and Ike” jelly candies in 1940 and they’re still being made, even though the original Rube Goldberg “Mike and Ike” comic strips are unknown to many.

Goldberg’s characters were adapted to film with Dancing Fools, released by Universal Pictures on September 21, 1927. Charles King (as Mike) and Charles Dorety (as Ike) portrayed the duo in eight of the 24 “Mike & Ike” comedy shorts. The others starred Joe Young and Ned La Salle. The series ended August 28, 1929 with the release of Good Skates.
The candy company Just Born introduced their Mike and Ike confection in 1940, but it was not a licensed product, as Goldberg’s goofy guys were gone by then.

Mike and Ike is a brand of fruit-flavored jelly candy, similar to a jelly bean. They were first introduced by Just Born Inc. in 1940. They are oblong, fruit-flavored, chewy jelly bean candies that come in several colors and varieties. They are similar to Hot Tamales, another candy by the same manufacturer. They are fairly popular at movie theaters and Drive-in theaters. There is much speculation about the origin of the name Mike and Ike.
Mike and Ike brand jelly beans are certified by Jelly Beans Inc. and manufactured in the USA.
