Micro-loft

The term “micro-loft” was trademarked by Rosslyn Lofts (Los Angeles, CA), with a first use in commerce on August 11, 2006. The term “microloft”—synthetic fibers—had been trademarked since 2003. A “micro-loft” is a tiny loft apartment. “Micro-loft” was used in the film Wanderlust (2012), which featured its characters living in the tiny Manhattan space—although the term had been more popular in Los Angeles at that time. “Tumblr’s David Karp Not Into Micro-Lofting” was the title of a January 16, 2012 article on the real estate blog Curbed NY.

The term “micro unit” (or “micro apartment”) was popularized in 2012.

Buxbaum Group and The Amerland Group purchased downtown LA’s Rosslyn Hotel, Rosslyn Lofts, 451 S. Main St., for $24.5 million and are promising all kinds of renovations.

The building’s 259 new affordable “micro-loft” units will be built on floors three though nine. All apartments will include kitchenettes, all-new plumbing and electrical wiring, new bathroom fixtures, heating, finished concrete flooring and ceiling fans. The units will also have phone, Internet and cable access. “Our goal is to provide the Internet access free to tenants,” Jules Arthur, a principal at the Amerland Group, noted. “Basic electric for cooking and heating also will be paid by the landlord on the affordable housing floors.”

Tumblr’s David Karp Not Into Micro-Lofting

Monday, January 16, 2012, by Dave Hogarty
Tumblr founder David Karp—who created an Internet site that whittled the Internet from long-form blog posts to bite-sized entries of videos, photos, and quotes—wanted nothing so reductive in his living space. He recently purchased a 1,700 square foot loft at the Esquire building at 330 Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg for $1.6 million. That’s a lot of “notes”!

The setup is sturdy. Rudd and costar Jennifer Aniston play George and Linda, sharp-edged Manhattanites who can barely afford their tiny living quarters — known as a “micro-loft,” in Realtor-speak — even when George brings home a salary from his hated corporate job.

This week has become small spaces week in New York City, with the announcement of the winner of the city’s adAPT micro apartment competition and the unveiling of the runners-up.

The designs include 232-square-foot micro-lofts from a team led by Peter Gluck. The lofts would fit 20 to a building on the typical 25 by 100-foot lot, and like the adAPT competition finalists, the building would include many shared amenities.
