“Medicine is not health care. Food is health care. Medicine is sick care”

“Medicine is not health care. Food is health care. Medicine is sick care” (or “Medicine is not healthcare. Food is healthcare. Medicine is sickcare”) is a saying that has been printed on many images. Authorship is uncertain.

“Medicine is not healthcare. Food is healthcare. Medicine is sickcare. Let’s all get that straight!” was posted on Twitter by The Paleo Foundation on August 22, 2012. “Medicine is not Health Care, Food is Health Care, Medicine is Sick Care. Let’s all get this straight, for a change #Nutrition #Right_Weigh” was posted on Twitter by Mai Nasser on September 30, 2012.

“‘Medicine is not healthcare. Food is healthcare. Medicine is sickcare. Let’s all get this straight for a change.’ The quote is attributed to American physician Sidney R Garfield (1906-1984), who sought to understand and treat the body, mind, and spirit of his patients and ended up founding a prepaid healthcare scheme and hospital in the USA in the 1940s” was printed in The Chronicle (Australia) on December 24, 2012. It is uncertain if Sidney R. Garfield, co-founder the Kaiser Permanente healthcare system with businessman Henry J. Kaiser, ever said this because the quote became popular in 2012—almost 30 years after his death.

“Medicine is not healthcare—Food is healthcare. Medicine is sick care…”
I cannot speak for Dr. Stein’s political philosophies, policies, and practices, but I certainly like this quip. Food is healthcare, and food does not simply include what we eat. We take in food with all sensory organs. This is why Ayurveda and other holistic health sciences have so much to offer us, and study of such systems allows us to re/activate our innate capacity for self-healing.
