“Math trumps politics”

“Math (always) trumps politics” means that the fiscal realities of a budget always come first; a government can’t do much of anything without money.  The “math” involves how a government can come up with the money. “Math trumps politics” has been cited in print since at least October 2008, when the tax plans of presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama were compared.

A similar saying is “money trumps politics.”

At the risk of repeating myself again, math trumps politics.

You may hate the Ryan plan. But at least it faces reality. If you don’t like it, come up with your own, but if it doesn’t include entitlement reform, all you’re doing is wasting your time and everyone else’s.

I’ve quoted and linked Karl Denninger’s Market Ticker here many times. In my opinion, it’s one of the most important sites on the internet for economic issues.

If I had to boil down his thousands of Tickers into a single phrase, it would be this: “Math trumps politics.”

Math trumps politics.

I keep saying that and I will continue to say it until November 2012, and probably beyond.
