“Many failures did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up”
“Many failures did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up” is often credited to American inventor Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931), but it’s not known that he ever said it. “Sometimes it is afterwards given to those who suffer themselves to be defeated, to learn how close they were to success” was cited in print in November 1918; had Edison said this, he surely would have been credited for it. “Many of life’s failures are men who did not know how close they were to success when they gave up” was cited in print in 1973—well after Edison’s death.
