Mannouncer (man + announcer); Mannouncing

“Mannouncer” (man + announcer) and “mannouncing” (man + announcing) were used in August 2016, during the Rio Olympics. The terms apply to male announcers who are clearly more comfortable covering male athletes.

“Tired of ‘mannouncers’?” was posted on Twitter on August 10, 2016. “‘Mannouncing’ Won’t Stop Female Olympians or Their Fans” by Elizabeth Daley was published in the Advocate on August 12, 2016, popularizing both “mannouncer” and “mannouncing.” The Times of India (New Delhi) stated on August 20, 2016:

“These commentators are sexist and underplay the triumphs of women achievers’ vis-a-vis men. The word (mannouncer—ed.) was coined recently, following a slew of incidents at the Rio Olympics this year.”

“Mannouncing” Won’t Stop Female Olympians or Their Fans
While men dominate sports coverage year-round, the Olympics offers a brief glimpse at the talent of female athletes.

Still, many women find themselves hitting mute to block out the daft comments of mostly male sportscasters, or “mannouncers,” as they have been called. It seems like 90 percent of people talking over athletes are men, and it seems 90 percent of the time, they can’t just not talk.

What is a mannouncer?
These commentators are sexist and underplay the triumphs of women achievers’ vis-a-vis men. The word was coined recently, following a slew of incidents at the Rio Olympics this year.
