Manhattan Cocktail “212” area code explanation

It is sometimes said that an easy way to remember the Manhattan cocktail is to recall the telephone area code “212” for its ingredients—2 oz. (rye) whiskey, 1 oz. sweet vermouth, 2 dashes angostura bitters.. While this is true, it has no connection with the origin of the cocktail. The Manhattan cocktail has been cited in pint since the 1880s, and the “212” area code was established in 1947.

Wikipedia: Manhattan (cocktail)
A Manhattan is a cocktail made with whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters. While rye is the traditional whiskey of choice, other commonly used whiskies include Canadian whisky, bourbon, blended whiskey, and Tennessee whiskey. The cocktail is usually stirred with ice then strained into a chilled cocktail glass and garnished traditionally with a maraschino cherry. A Manhattan may also be served on the rocks in a lowball glass.

Wikipedia: Area codes 212, 646, and 332
Area codes 212, 646, and 332 are area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for most of the borough of Manhattan in New York City. By area, it is one of the smallest numbering plan areas (NPAs). The three area codes form an overlay numbering plan, and are also overlaid by area code 917 of a numbering plan area that comprises the entirety of New York City. Area code 212 is the original code assigned for all of the city in 1947. Area code 212 was restricted to just Manhattan and the Bronx in 1985, when area code 718 was created for the city’s other three boroughs; the Bronx was moved to area code 718 in 1992. Subsequently, area code 646 was assigned as an overlay code for Manhattan in 1999, and area code 332 was also added in 2017.

Here is our Smooth Ambler “Manhattan”. Fun Fact: (since we’re fond of a few Yankees around here) the area code of Manhattan is 212, which is the same as the drink proportions for the cocktail. 2 Whiskey, 1 Sweet Vermouth, 2 Dashes Bitters. Check out our website for the recipe!

I just realized a cool cosmic coincidence. The Manhattan cocktail, which likely dates back to the (pre-prohibition) 1880s, generally uses a contemporary ratio of 2💯2 rye:vermouth:dashes o’ bitters, which is easy to remember. Guess what? The area code for Manhattan is 212.

There are a few origin stories of how this classic cocktail got its name. Legend has it that it was invented at New York’s Manhattan Club. At that time it was 2 parts rye, 1 part vermouth, 2 dashes bitters, aka 212, Manhattan’s area code. Its stood the test of time & we love riffing off the recipe to make it our own.

The 212 area code came into existence in 1947. The Manhattan has been around since the late 19th century. Cool theory, but it doesn’t hold its liquor.
