“Make me one with everything” (Zen master-ordering-a-hot dog joke)

A “hot dog with everything” is one that has been “dragged through the garden”—that is, loaded up with mustard, onions, sweet pickle relish, and various other toppings.

A joke appeared by 1991 that a Zen master (or a Buddhist or the Dalai Lama) approached a hot dog vendor and said, “Make me one with everything!” The mildly amusing joke has been put on T-shirts and other products.

I don’t get it, how is this funny?

It is “make me one with everything.”

This is a play on the ideas some Buddhists have about life being a journey whose end game is to become one with the Universe. They live lives, steadily progressing to that state, or at least aiming for it.

Not a great explanation of Buddhism, but it is something like that.

So, “make me one with everything,” is like giving a Buddhist his fondest desire, and in fact, what he is striving toward, in this life, and all his next lives until he gets to become one with everything.

The reason behind the name is simple. Mackenzie and Hunter came across a joke that read, “What did the Buddha say to the hotdog vendor?” “Make me one with everything.” They wanted the experience of eating the hotdog to connect the eater with everything the region has to offer. Therefore, the joke has become their mission: Buddha Dog, making you one with everything.

Each hot dog consists of four separate parts working as one: the sausage, the cheese, the sauce and the bun. Combined, these parts can make more than four dozen different varieties of hotdog for customers to enjoy, specially made to fit individual tastes.

A Tibetan monk walks up to a hot dog vendor and says, “Make me one with everything.”

The hot dog vendor hands over the sausage and bun with all the trimmings, and the monk hands over a twenty. The vendor pockets it.

The monk asks, “Where’s my change?” and the vendor replies, “Change must come from within.”

A gun then extends from the monk’s chest and he asks again.

The vendor says, “Whoa, man, where did that come from?”

The Tibetan monk replies, “This is my inner piece.”
