Lower Eastpacking District (Lower East Side + Meatpacking District)

“Lower Eastpacking” (Lower East Side + Meatpacking District) is a neighborhood nickname that indicates that the Lower East Side has the same trendy restaurants and clubs as the Meatpacking District.

“Lower Eastpacking District Sees Gastronomic Surge” was the title of an article on New York magazine’s Grub Street blog on November 15, 2006.

The Lower East Side, a.k.a. the Lower Eastpacking District, was never exactly a hotbed of haute gastronomy. But as Rob and Robin note in this Short List, it’s gotten to the point that just Rivington Street alone has seen everything from pizza to Cambodian noodles appear. Below, a link to four new places worth trying in the “Rivington Street corridor.”

A sure sign of a neighborhood’s freefall into irreversible suck is when bloggers unleash derisive nicknames. Take the Lower East Side, which the online set evocatively, and rightfully, dubbed both Hell Square and the Lower Eastpacking District. It’s a nod to the weekend cattle-car crunch, morphing bars and sidewalks into Mardis Gras north, minus the beads and bare breasts. Sometimes.

Who knew we were so trendy? I’ll be one of the tattoo-free Lower Eastpacking pseudo-artist poseurs if someone else wants to claim upper-west-side-black-amex status. Funny article.

Lower Eastpacking District

It was back in 2006 when, mourning the loss of our to-go margaritas (no worries — we’ve since found another spot that serves flavored margs to go!), we coined this term for the Lower East Side, to ram home the fact that — on the weekends at least — it’s a meatpacking-like circus of high heels and lowlifes. Now, two years later, Guest of a Guest frets, “Is the LES Dunzo?”, and Down by the Hipster is like, “Did you really just ask that?”

Lower East Side or Lower Eastpacking?
Posted on: December 21st, 2011 at 6:28 am by Elie
As the nightlife component of the Meatpacking District continues its conquest of the Lower East Side, we are left with the neighborhood designation of Lower Eastpacking.  The phrase has been thrown around more frequently of late, thanks in part to BD Hotels purchasing the stalled Hotel Ludlow and the Abe & Arthur’s crew considering 199 Bowery.

9. Which neighborhood feels like the opposite of your neighborhood?
Ordinarily we would say the Meatpacking District, but these days the Lower East Side is mimicking this same oversaturated club vibe. So, to answer your question, Murray Hill.
