“Love the wine you’re with”
American sing/songwriter Stephen Still wrote “Love the One You’re With” in 1970. The main lyric is, “If you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with.”
Wine drinkers have changed this to “If you can’t be with the wine you love, love the wine you’re with.” “Love the wine your with” has been printed on many gift items, such as posters, T-shirts and bumper stickers. “Love the wine you’re with” has been cited in print since at least 2007 and has been cited on Twitter since March 5, 2009.
Other beer/wine sayings inspired by song lyrics include “Don’t worry, be hoppy,” “Don’t worry, beer happy,” “Don’t worry, beer hoppy” and “Do you know the way to Chardonnay.”
Wikipedia: Love the One You’re With
“Love the One You’re With” is a 1970 single by folk rocker Stephen Stills. The first release from his solo debut Stephen Stills, it peaked at No. 14 in the Billboard Hot 100.
A live version by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young appears on their album 4 Way Street. A solo version by Stills appears on the Crosby, Stills and Nash CD Demos.
Stills wrote the song after being inspired by the tag line—“If you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with” which was a frequent remark by musician Billy Preston. Stills asked him for permission to use the line in a song and Preston agreed immediately.

And the payoff line…
“And if you can’t be with the one you love, honey, love the one you’re with.”
I realized that this song is really a metaphor for politics, life, and most assuredly…wine! That’s right — time to stop critiquing wines for what they aren’t…and start praising them for what they are. Time to stop living in fantasy…and live for the moment. Appreciate what you have…not what you don’t have.

For the more adventuresome wine consumer, there is a world of white wine, both domestic and imported, made from less familiar varietals that can be immensely enjoyable. At least for the summer, it might be good to adopt the philosophy that if you can’t be with the wine you love, love the wine you’re with.

An old turn of phrase about wines: If you can’t be with the wine you love, love the wine you’re with.
