Lower East Side Neighborhood Nickname Alert

The Lower East Side has largely remained uncarved, with the exception of Two Bridges. However, there are unofficial nicknames in the blogosphere – Curbed (and Dealbreaker) coined micro-hood Hell Square and also tried to get momentum behind BelDel (south of Delancey and east of Allen). With regard to the latter designation, it seems the powers-that-be would love to rechristen this area as “LoDel.”
We first noticed “LoDel” while perusing Con Edison’s Storm Center map last weekend. So far, it hasn’t really received much traction in real estate parlance. Yet.

MONIKERS Brokers to Curbed: Stop trying to make “BelDel” happen! That’s what we imagine anyway, as the brokerbabble du jour is describing the Lower East Side neighborhood south of Delancey and east of Allen as “LoDel.” It’s not as catchy as Hell Square, but hey, not every nabe gets B&T traffic and an unfortunate confluence of one-way streets. Apple Maps Endorses “LoDel” Neighborhood Moniker
Posted on: November 21st, 2012 by Elie
First it was Bing maps, and now Apple has already followed suit. This deplorable LoDel moniker is apparently gaining some serious traction as label for that area south of Delancey between Allen and Essex Streets. The Cupertino giant baked it into their controversial new maps application.

Apple Maps Trying To Make “LoDel” Neighborhood Happen
By Ben Yakas in News on November 23, 2012 11:41 AM
While Google Maps has been shockingly unreceptive to Garth Johnston’s frequent attempts to coin HoBro (centered around the Houston and Broadway location of Hollister), Apple Maps has pulled the trigger on a new made-up neighborhood in lower Manhattan: LoDel, aka Below Delancey. Made-up neighborhoods whistleblower Matthew Hyland noticed the addition as well: “I saw LoDel show up on the Google map some time ago and I nixed it. The guy came back with “SoDeWeAl” South Delancey West Allen and I nixed that too. He threatened me even though I explained I lived at Broome and Orchard for two years and never heard that before.”
