“Local Food: Thousands of Miles Fresher”

“Local Food: Thousands of Miles Fresher” is a popular bumper sticker that was created by the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project (ASAP) of Asheville, North Carolina, in 2003. The statement that local foods are “thousands of miles fresher” was cited in print a little before the bumper sticker. “Our customers are those who can appreciate that our produce is thousands of miles fresher than supermarket produce” was said by Tom Roberts and Lois Labbe, Snakeroot Organic Farm, Pittsfield, ME, and printed in The New Farmers’ Market (2001).

“With local products, as it’s often said, it’s usually thousands of miles fresher” was cited in print in 2008.

Local Foods ... Thousands of Miles Fresher
Have you ever taken a bite of a tomato right off the vine? The taste is amazing ... so much better than anything one could buy at a store. And did you know that the nutritional content of a vegetable begins to diminish the moment it is picked? So ... if our food comes from the other side of the country ... or a completely different country ... how many vitamins and minerals are left in it by the time it hits our plate? Not much.
