“Letting politicians be able to own stock is like letting referees openly bet on games”

There have been many complaints that politicians should be barred from “insider trading”—investing in companies they are legislating. This has often been compared to a sports referee betting on games.

“It’s more along the lines of ‘referee bets heavily on outcome of games to which he is assigned,’ or perhaps ‘politician regulating industry refuses to put assets in blind trust’” was posted on Twitter by Brian Umana on June 12, 2020. “Why are politicians even allowed to own stock? That’s like refs being able to bet on games they ref in” was posted on Twitter by Jaylin Taylor on February 1, 2021.

Why should any politician be allowed to be an investor directly or indirectly or have advisory/board seat in any company that’s involved in voting or the election process? That’s like allowing a referee to bet on games he is working. Just amazing that it’s allowed #2020Election

saw a quote today that if politicians are allowed to trade stocks it’s same as referee being allowed to bet on the game they will participate in.

Why are politicians able to own shares in the stock market? That’s like saying that referees should be allowed to bet on the games that they are reffing. They have full control of the outcome.
