“Let’s have a moment of silence for all those stuck in traffic on their way to the gym”

“Let’s have a moment of silence for all those Americans who are stuck in traffic on their way to the gym to ride the stationary bicycle” is a jocular one-line gym saying that has been printed on many images. Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) had made the saying several times, with varied wording. “How many people will sit in their cars this evening, stuck in traffic on their way to ride a stationary bike or run on a treadmill?” asked Blumenauer on the floor of the House on July 28, 1997.

“Just think how many Americans get stuck in traffic—just frustrated—on their way to a health club to ride a stationary bike,” Blumenauer said in 1998. “‘Let’s have a moment of silence for all those Americans who are stuck in traffic on their way to the gym to ride the stationary bicycle.’  - Earl Blumenauer” ws posted on the newsgroup rec.bicycles.misc on August 2, 2005.

Blumenauer thinks we need to have a new version of the question, “How many people are stuck in traffic on their way to ride a stationary bike at a health club?” We need to craft a similar question for national infrastructure and determine what bicycling can do to answer it, he says.
