Kossack (Daily Kos community member)
The Daily Kos is a progressive political blog, founded in 2002 by Markos Moulitsas. The blog gets its name from the second syllable of the name “Markos.”
Members of the Daily Kos community have been dubbed “Kossacks” since at least 2004. The “Kossacks” name doesn’t properly fit because “Kos” is pronounced like the word “dose,” while “Kossack” has a first syllable that is pronounced like the word “gloss.” “Kossacks” is one of several names lised on the website’s Kossary (dKosopedia)and is not considered derogatory.
Wikipedia: Daily Kos
Daily Kos (pronounced /ˈkoʊs/) is an American political blog that publishes news and opinion from a liberal or progressive point of view. It functions as a discussion forum and group blog for a variety of netroots activists, whose efforts are primarily directed toward influencing and strengthening the Democratic Party. Additionally, the site features a participatory political encyclopedia, glossaries, and other permanent content.
Daily Kos is an example of a collaborative blog, offering comment-posting privileges to its visitors. Daily Kos was founded by Markos Moulitsas (Kos from the last syllable of his first name, his nickname while in the military) in 2002. In 2007, its parent company, Kos Media, LLC, began a fellowship program to help fund a new generation of progressive activists. About a dozen contributing editors provide content for the site, with three to four new editors being chosen from the Daily Kos community every year.
As of January 2010, Daily Kos had an average weekday traffic of over 600,000 visits, and received over 20 million visits per month. It is financially sustained by advertising, with Google AdSense and Blogads. The ads focus mostly on activist causes, media, and political candidates. Members can also purchase an ad-free subscription to the site if they want.
The website runs on the Scoop content management system. In 2009, Time magazine listed the Daily Kos in its “Most Overrated Blogs” section. Despite the listing, Time magazine readers named the Daily Kos the second best blog.

I read this blog like anyone else and don’t expect to read crap like this. I’m just a regular Kossack who posted my opinion. I didn’t “recommend” it or chose to promote it. I’m sorry, but you have every right to disagree with me on that thread…but you have no right to demonize me here like this.
I’m sorry but your talk about “kicking people in the teeth” combined with your very personal derision of kos and me is fucking childish and irresponsible.
Read your post again….and think for a second what it’s like to get hate mail in your inbox. Because it’s already happened to me…..not from a winger, like I’ve had in the past…
but from a fellow Kossack.

Yes, Kossacks, while you all were out linking to military porn sites and fraternity house pages and checking out friendster (you sordid crew, you), I’ve been spending my past few days in a leisurely, wide-ranging email discussion with Ambassador Joseph Wilson, asking him the questions we’ve all been dying to ask him.

Why the rise of the left-wing blogosphere has been bad for the Democratic party.

And yet mainstream Democratic politicians are desperately trying to ingratiate themselves with Kos and his audience. A Who’s Who of top tier Democrats have written “diaries” for the site, including Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer, and Ted Kennedy. The above listed politicians, and their less mainstream colleagues (think the John Conyers/Louise Slaughter variety), are constantly romancing the Kossacks.

(Note: At dKos my sign-on is cwilson, which is completely coincidental. The posters at dKos, who call themselves “Kossacks” after the Russian Czarist police, repeatedly lied and claimed a connection even after I posted on multiple occasions that I am not Chris Wilson. I did give $500 to Chris’s defense fund, but that’s the total extent of any similarity or connection between us.)

History for Kossacks: Cossacks
by Unitary Moonbat

“What’s in a name?” the Bard once asked. If one were to ascribe to the implications behind that deceptively simple question, the answer would be “quite a bit.” A name carries with it a history, a legacy (and perhaps even obligations) of which the person bearing the name might not even be aware. That being the case, please let me invite you into the Cave of the Moonbat to discuss the etymology of one of this community’s adoptive nicknames, “Kossacks.”
