Knishwich (knish + sandwich)

A “knishwich” (knish + sandwich) is a knish with a filling, such as pastrami or corned beef. The Last Chance Antiques and Cheese Cafe (Tannersville, NY) has served the “knish-wich” since at least 2005, when the dish was cited in a New York State guidebook. Several New York City restaurants have included the knishwich on their menus.

I want you to do something. It’s very important, OK?  Get about $15, go to the UWS, go into Lansky’s and order a Knishwich.

Yes, they serve lunch, too—good deli food like Mettayya’s Knish-Wich (corned beef, pastrami, or turkey on a grilled potato knish) as well as a variety of burgers, including one that’s vegetarian.

But the breakfast foods and sandwiches were solid. Some were very solid, like the Coney Island knishwich: a potato knish cut in half and topped with corned beef, pastrami, muenster, coleslaw & Russian dressing.

6. Knishwich, Ben’s Best
The ramen burger is a flash in the pan, but the knishwich ($8.95), is a mashup of two old school tastes that will endure. I am partial to pastrami between my potato, but you can also get corned beef, or go for broke and order both.  96-40 Queens Blvd., Rego Park, 718-897-1700

Pastrami Wish — Why didn’t anyone think of it before? A Coney Island-style knish, split open to reveal the potato glory within, layered with hot pastrami and sauerkraut. It was invented not long ago in the Bronx at an obscure kosher Jewish deli by an owner who got the idea — or so he says — from his grandkids.
