“Keep Dallas Plastic”

“Keep Dallas Plastic” is yet another imitation of the popular slogan “Keep Austin Weird.” A less popular Dallas version is “Keep Dallas Pretentious.”

The seemingly endless imitation Texas city slogans include “Keep San Antonio Lame,” “Keep Dallas Pretentious,” “Keep Dallas Douche,” “Keep Houston Dirty,” “Keep Denton Chido,” “Keep Abilene Boring,” “Keep College Station Normal,” “Keep Georgetown Normal,” “Keep Round Rock Mildly Unusual,” “Keep Wimberley Weirder,” “Keep Lubbock Flat” and “Keep Waco Wacko.”

Keep Dallas Plastic - Introduction
Keep Dallas Plastic!

Welcome to the network for Dallas Progressives.
Come here to meet, share, expose, and assemble.

“Dallas and Fort Worth are no longer just about big hair, shopping, football and J.R. [Ewing], and that’s what this is about,” said Dallas Mayor Laura Miller.

The story behind it.
Making fun of the Austin motto, “Keep Austin Weird”, “Keep Dallas Plastic” sarcastically reminds us that we’re still who we are, even though we live in Dallas, and needles us to shed the idea that good things can’t happen in a city of 6 million people.

What is it?
It’s a neutral umbrella for progressives to organize and promote. It’s a collection of webpages and a common database of active progressives. But it’s not what it seems. This is actually your website, not ours! - huh?

This website is an umbrella for groups of progressive people with a common announce list, msg board, and place for free home pages.

Keep Dallas Plastic is not a group of 20 or 30 progressive people promoting a few certain causes. It’s just a framework for other organizers to create and promote their own group with a common
set of resources to help the groups grow.

And while we’re here, this is a great place for folks to build pages and information about the local Dallas alternative resources.

I found the most provocative speakers were Dean from alt7.com and Chris from keep Dallas plastic. Both of them understood the need to build up an audience for Dallas’ existing cultural creatives. Or maybe I’m just hearing what I want to hear from what they said since that’s one of my personal goals now that I’m back in Dallas.
