“Katz’s Never Kloses” (Katz’s Deli and Bar slogan)

“Katz’s Never Kloses” was the famous slogan of Katz’s Deli and Bar, started by Marc Katz in 1979 at West 6th Street in Austin. It went 24/7 in 1983. There was also a Houston Katz’s restaurant. Katz’s did, indeed, close. On January 1, 2011, Katz’s closed its business.

Katz’s Deli and Bar was never affiliated with Katz’s, the famous New York City delicatessen that began in 1888. Both delis serve (or served) the same New York Jewish cuisine, such as pastrami sandwiches and cheesecake.

THE HISTORY OF KATZ’S DELI
When Marc Katz opened Katz Deli in 1979, and introduced New York deli cuisine to Austin, the local restaurant scene would never be the same.

In several ways and on several occasions, Marc Katz has, through Katz’s Deli, revolutionized Austin’s restaurant industry.

Katz’s extensive menu of New York deli classics and traditional Jewish kosher-style cuisine, for example, virtually set the stage and led the way for the explosion of ethnic food restaurants that followed Katz’s into Austin in the 1980’s and 1990’s.

In 1983, Katz’s introduced its 24/7 Katz’s Never Kloses operating format, bringing late-night dining to downtown Austin, and once again irrevocably transforming the local restaurant scene. A magnet for theatergoers and night people of all kinds, Katz’s fostered its own fast-paced version of New York deli culture throughout the 1980’s, complementing the ever-growing popularity of its food and menu.

A relentless innovator, Marc Katz has consistently broken new ground in promoting Katz’s. Through savvy use of radio and TV advertising, as well as media publicity, he has built Katz’s reputation far beyond Austin, achieving a national renown for his deli that rivals even the fame of the legendary delis of his native New York City.

For all that Katz’s represents to Austin’s restaurant industry, however, its greatest accomplishment lies in the area of community involvement. During his deli’s long life, Marc Katz has been an avid supporter of fundraisers and benefits, helping to raise thousands of dollars for causes of all kinds, from AIDS awareness to education to arts and music to public health and safety. When Marc Katz says, “We keep what we have by giving it away,” he means that civic involvement plays a crucial role in the success of Katz’s Deli. Finding imaginative, exciting ways to give back to the community is Marc Katz’s most revolutionary role as one of the top restaurateurs not only in Austin, but throughout the country.

All Ablog Austin
Katz’s has finally klosed, though a little earlier than planned
By Patrick George | Sunday, January 2, 2011, 12:25 PM
All morning, hungry Austinites have tried getting in to Katz’s Deli on West Sixth Street, only to find the doors locked and a sign on the window thanking customers for coming for 32 years.

That’s because Katz’s is closed sooner than anticipated, owner Marc Katz said today. Earlier, Katz indicated that the storied Austin deli would be open for its final day today.

“We ran out of food last night,” Katz said.
