In 1887 Civil War major and former Travis County sheriff, Theodore van Buren Coupland, founded this small town on inherited land.
The Coupland Dancehall, built in 1910, had several different functions over the years: a mercantile store, a home for quarterly pun-offs, and a newsletter called The Coupland Tavern World Globe News was published there.
Two bars from inside the Tavern, both over 100 years old, are now in the Dancehall. These antique bars add authenticity and a sense of history. The larger, beveled mirrored beauty is dated 1886, and still has buckshot holes intact. The Dancehall can be reserved for special occasions, private parties, receptions, weddings, and fund raisers, or just about any occasion.

The bar inside the Coupland Dance Hall & Tavern is a thing of beauty. Its unvarnished surface, circa 1886, is dark and polished from years of resting elbows, the surface peppered with buckshot holes from a long-forgotten barroom brawl. Beside it is another bar, even older as it dates back to 1700s Louisiana; a third one across the room backs up to a corner by the stage. The sign hanging over it says it all: “Just a Two-Step Back In Time.”
