An Afternoon at the Joker Stairs, New York’s Newest Tourist Attraction
By Nate Jones@kn8
(...)
On a sunny October Saturday, the stairs, which are located off Shakespeare Avenue in Highbridge, were crowded with sightseers from all over the globe. Many film locations look less grand in real life, but the Joker steps remain as imposing as they are onscreen, looming over the bodegas of Jerome Avenue. With their narrow vertical orientation, the stairs are perfectly suited for the age of the Instagram Story, and their newfound popularity may be aided by the ease of transit from Manhattan: They’re just a short walk from the 167th Street 4 station, itself only one stop away from Yankee Stadium.

How the Bronx should reclaim the Joker Stairs, an Instagram hotspot

In the 1970s, Martin Scorsese didn’t have to venture out of Times Square to show New York’s seedy side in “Taxi Driver.” As a testament to how much New York has changed, “The Joker” director Todd Phillips had to scour Brooklyn, Jersey City and the Bronx to find similarly gritty streets. One of those locations, a “step street” in the Bronx that features prominently in the film, has recently been redubbed the Joker Stairs. Tourists flock to the stairs in the Highbridge section to take photos reenacting Joaquin Phoenix’s dark anti-hero dance. The locals aren’t happy, but they can stop it. If they want.
