Jewel in the Valley Crown (McAllen slogan)

The city of McAllen in the Rio Grande Valley has long been known as the “City of Palms.” A McAllen slogan (dating from at least 2007) is “Jewel of the Valley Crown,” enphasizing McAllen’s place in a resurgent Rio Grande Valley.

Wikipedia: Rio Grande Valley
The Rio Grande Valley is an area located in the southernmost tip of Texas. It lies along the northern bank of the Rio Grande, which separates Mexico from the United States.

The Rio Grande Valley is not a valley, but a delta or floodplain. Early settlers from Mexico felt that the term “Valley” sounded more inviting to tourists and northern investors than did “Delta.” However, there are Rio Grande Valley residents, particularly from Edinburg, that refute this claim. The Rio Grande Valley is also called “El Valle”, the Spanish translation of “the valley”, by those who live there. Another affectionate term that the residents of the Rio Grande Valley use to refer to the area is the “RGV.”

The region is made up of four counties: Starr County, Hidalgo County, Willacy County, and Cameron County. As of January 1, 2007, the Texas State Data Center estimated the population of the Rio Grande Valley at 1,139,581. Over 80% of the residents of the Valley are Hispanic or Latino.

The largest city is Brownsville (Cameron County), followed by McAllen (Hidalgo County). Other major cities include Harlingen, Mission, Edinburg, and Pharr.

The Jewel in the Valley Crown!

McAllen is indeed the “Jewel in the Valley Crown.” Fifty years ago, the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas was a rural, agriculture based economy characterized by sporadic growth.

Today, the area is being transformed into a major international trade area by developing first-rate commercial, retail, office, industrial, medical, retirement and educational facilities. McAllen is one of the major cities of the Rio Grande Valley.  Cultural events, concerts, tourism and entertainment are plentiful in the city of palms.

The promotion of international and retail trade, tourism and manufacturing is among the most successful along the U.S.-Mexico Border. .

McAllen is indeed the “Jewel in the Valley Crown.” This is not to imply the other Valley communities are not doing well. It is just apparent that McAllen, economically, is running like a finely tuned engine. Consider these facts: The McAllen, Mission, Edinburg MSA and Reynosa, Mexico, comprise a dynamic community with a combined population of 1.4 million. During the past two decades, this area has made bold advances, with unprecedented growth in both population and industrial attraction.
