“It’s strange that there is a setting on your toaster to completely burn the bread”

Many people burn toast on a low setting, and then wonder why there are higher settings. “Why do toasters always have a setting that burns the toast to a horrible crisp which no decent human being would eat?” was a question posted on a 2003 forum. “Why do toasters always have a setting that burns the bread to a horrible crisp that no decent human being would eat?” was published in a 2007 book.

Why is there a setting on toasters that would totally burn bread?
On my toaster it goes up to number 6. Even number 2 burns bread badly so why would anyone ever want or need it on number 6? Its the same for all of them - why?

Because bread isn’t the only thing toasters toast. Have you ever tried toasting a crumpet? It needs to be in there much longer than bread to get to a nice golden crispy texture. English muffins take longer to cook than bread too, but not as long as crumpets.
