“It was so cold that Starbucks was serving coffee on a stick”

Coffee is usually—but not always—served hot. A winter joke is:

“It was so cold that Dunkin’ Donuts (or Starbucks or a local coffeehouse) was serving coffee on a stick.”

“It’s so cold, street vendors are selling coffee on a stick” was printed in many newspapers in January 1988. “It was so cold…Starbucks was serving coffee on a stick!” was printed in a 2003 blog. “It’s so cold, dunkin donuts is servin coffee on a stick” was posted on Twitter on December 8, 2010.

The joke is somewhat dated. “Coffee on a stick” is a product that is sold when it’s hot.

Those of you who remember former “Tonight Show” host Johnny Carson know that a favorite joke always began: “Man, it was cold in Hollywood today ...” and then a pause so someone in the audience could yell: “How cold was it?”

“It was so cold,” Carson would answer, “that pickpockets were sticking their hands in strangers’ pockets just to keep their hands warm!” Or “... that Starbucks was serving coffee on a stick.”
