“If you work at a cemetery, every shift is a graveyard shift”

A “graveyard shift” is a night shift, such as one between midnight and 6 a.m. It does not necessarily involve a work shift at a cemetery, but there are jokes.

“And for two summers, I worked full-time in a cemetery, where every shift was a graveyard shift” was printed in the Seattle (WA) Post-Intelligencer on November 28, 1995. “Every shift is the graveyard shift at the cemetery” was posted on the Straight Dope Message Board on June 20, 2010. “When you work at a cemetery, every shift is a graveyard shift” was posted on Twitter by Adam Baxter on January 20, 2011.

Wikipedia: Graveyard Shift
Graveyard shift is a work shift running through the late hours of the evening to the early hours of the morning, typically from midnight until 8 am.

28 November 1995, Seattle (WA) Post-Intelligencer, “Term’s Origins Matter of Grave Concern” by Jon Hahn, pg. C2:
And for two summers, I worked full-time in a cemetery, where every shift was a graveyard shift.
(...)
Greg Marshall, a Graytop driver and Seattle cabby for more than 30 years, explained over morning coffee at the Puppy Club that “graveyard shift” originated when workers were moving bodies from an old Pioneer Square cemetery to Lake View Cemetery.

10 December 2005, Indiana (PA) Gazette, “Grave digging is solitary job” by Bill Zimmerman,  pg. 12, col. 5:
For Terry Rapach of Indiana, every shift is the graveyard shift.

He’s dug graves at all hours, in all types of weather and at cemeteries on all kinds of terrain, but he insists it isn’t hard work.
