“If you find yourself in a fair fight, you’ve done something wrong”

“If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck” and ““If you find yourself in a fair fight, you didn’t plan your mission properly” are sayings that have been printed on many images.

“I’ve always felt that, if you find yourself in a fair fight, you’ve screwed up. The challenge becomes, not being able to win a fair fight, but controlling the entire situation so that it is unfair in your favor” was posted on the newsgroup rec.games.frp.gurps by Xiphias Gladius on October 4, 1997. “If you’re in a fair fight, you didn’t plan it properly.—Nick Lappos, Chief R&D Pilot, Sikorsky Aircraft” was posted on the newsgroup Google Groups: sci.military.naval on November 23, 1998. “I quote Nick Lappos, Chief R&D Pilot for Sikorsky Aircraft ‘If you’re in a fair fight, you didn’t plan it properly’” was posted on the newsgroup alt.tv.stargate-sg1 on August 29, 1999. Nicholas Lappos was the program director for the Sikorsky S-92 helicopter.

“If you find yourself in a fair fight you didn’t plan your mission properly!” was posted on the newsgroup alt.fan.sarah-m-gellar on June 29, 2000. “If you find yourself in a fair fight, you have not planned enough” was posted on the newsgroup alt.fan.bgcrisis on November 14, 2001. “Murphy’s Rules of Warfare: (...) If you find yourself in a fair fight, you didn’t plan your mission properly” was posted on the newsgroup alt.war.vietnam on July 31, 2002. “If you find yourself in a fair fight, you didn’t plan your mission properly.(David Hackworth.)” was posted on the newsgroup alt.activism.death-penalty on February 20, 2003. “In fact, there is an old military aphorism which holds that if you find yourself in a fair fight you must be doing something wrong. (...) Joseph Reber, USMC Retired” was printed in the Press Dispatch (Victorville, CA) on March 2, 2003. “In the Army, we had a saying: If you’re in a fair fight, you didn’t prepare well enough” was printed in Black Belt magazine in August 2003. Colonel David Haskell Hackworth (1930-2005) probably said this, but it does not appear that he was the first.

“‘If you are ever in a fair fight, your tactics suck.’ I forget the attribution, think it was a former SEAL” was posted on the newsgroup misc.survivalism on March 28, 2002. “‘If you are in a fair fight, your tactics suck.’ - Herschel Davis” was posted on the newsgroup us.military.army on November 5, 2002. “If you are in a fair fight, your tactics suck! Hershel Davis USN Ret.” was posted on the newsgroup misc.fitness.weights on May 13, 2005. “As John Steinbeck once said. 1. Don’t pick a fight with an old man. If he is to old to fight, he’ll just kill you. 2. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck” was posted on the newsgroup news-sarasota on November 20, 2007. It’s probable that this version of the saying is from Hershel Davis. The 2007 attribution to American writer John Steinbeck (1902-1968) was jocular. Steinbeck never said it, but is frequently credited.

21 March 2003, Irish Times (Dublin, Ireland), “Allies can only guess at level of support for Saddam ; Psychological warfare has a key part in coalition tactics, reports Deaglan de Breadun in Doha,” pg. 14:
There is a sign in the Coalition Media Centre in Doha, capital of Qatar, which reads: “If you find yourself in a fair fight, you didn’t plan your mission properly.”

It provides an insight into the mental attitude behind US preparation for the war in Iraq: plan the campaign meticulously and use overwhelming force to achieve your goals.

23 March 2003, Sunday Herald (Glasgow, Scotland), “Part One: The Shock, The Awe, The Deaths,” pg. 1:
A prominent sign inside British military headquarters in Qatar gives the game away about the tactics being used by the coalition forces in the Iraq conflict. It reads: “If you find yourself in a fair fight, you didn’t plan your mission properly.” The message is clear. Why give aid to the opposition by revealing your plans in advance?

Profound Thinking!

To all you old law dogs now just lyin’ in the shade, current pistoleros and other fervent Second Amendment believers: I would rather be your friend, but if you are not interested in that, I am prepared to be a capable and efficient enemy.

This is the law: The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense. The sword is more important than the shield and skill is more important than either. The final weapon is the brain. All else is supplemental. As John Steinbeck once said.

1. Don’t pick a fight with an old man. If he is to old to fight, he’ll just kill you.

2. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

3. I carry a gun cause a cop is too heavy. (Gotta love this one!!)

4. America is not at war. The U.S. Military is at war. America is at the Mall. (Ain’t this the truth?)

5. When seconds count, the cops are just minutes away. (Yep, time is some time, but shoot first, then call 911)

6. A reporter did a human interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him “Why do carry a .45?”. The Ranger responded with, “Because they don’t make a .46.”

7. An armed man will kill an unarmed man with monotonous regularity.

8. The old sheriff was attending an awards dinner when a lady commented on his wearing his sidearm. “Sheriff, I see you have your pistol. Are you expecting trouble?” “NO Ma’am. If I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my rifle.” (Winchester Model 94 30-30 Cal. And loaded with Winchester Silver Tips, no doubt).

9. Beware the man who only has one gun. HE PROBABLY KNOWS HOW TO USE IT!!!
