“If we are to live together, we have to talk”
Former U.S. first lady Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) met with Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev (1894-1971) at her Manhattan home in October 1960. Roosevelt explained the situation (as cited in the Associated Press):
“We have to face the fact that either all of us are going to die together or we are going to learn to live together—and if we live together, we have to talk. People must talk to each other or run the risk of war.”
“We are going to die together or we are going to learn to live together and if we are to live together we have to talk” has become a frequently cited Eleanor Roosevelt quotation.
