“I’d like to thank my parents for making this possible and my children for making it necessary”
Danish and American pianist and comedian Victor Borge (1909-2000) was cited in a February 1958 newspaper for ending his performance with this jocular line:
“I want to thank my parents for making this program possible and my five children for making it necessary!”
A slightly different line was cited in a June 1958 newspaper:
“I wish to thank my parents, for making it possible. I wish to thank my children, for making it necessary.”
“I want to thank everyone for making this night necessary” is a somewhat similar line from New York Yankees player and baseball manager Yogi Berra (1925-2015), said on a “Yogi Berra night.”
Wikipedia: Victor Borge
Børge Rosenbaum (3 January 1909 – 23 December 2000), known professionally as Victor Borge (/ˈbɔːrɡə/ bor-gə), was a Danish and American comedian, conductor, and pianist who achieved great popularity in radio and television in the United States and Europe. His blend of music and comedy earned him the nicknames “The Clown Prince of Denmark,” “The Unmelancholy Dane,” and “The Great Dane.”
27 February 1958, Bayard (IA) News, “This ‘n’ That” by Mary Louise Robinson,
At the conclusion of the hour Borge made some acknowlegments. His weren’t the usual ones where they thank the guest stars, directors, etc. Said he: “I want to thank my parents for making this program possible and my five children for making it necessary!”
21 June 1958, New Statesman, “Time, Gentlemen, Please!,” pg. 806, col. 1:
... and his (Victor Borge’s—ed.) cod-serious speech of thanks at the end (‘I wish to thank my parents, for making it possible….I wish to thank my children, for making it necessary’ ).
