“I went to the store to buy chicken broth, but they said they were out of stock”

“Out of stock” means that a business has no more of an item. It shouldn’t be confused with the “stock” that is broth (bouillon), but there are jokes.

“I went to buy some bouillon cubes at the store today, but they were all out of stock…...sorry” was posted on Twitter by BlotterMonkey on December 8, 2011. “Tried to buy some bullion & broth but they were….....out of stock” was posted on Twitter by David Malki on December 14, 2017. “I went to the store to buy chicken broth… but they said they were out of stock” was posted on Reddit—Dadjokes on December 7, 2020.

“Do you know where you can get chicken broth in bulk? The stock market” and “I see the price of Oxo cubes has shot up again. The stock market’s gone crazy,” “The only stock options I have are chicken and beef” and “I started investing in stocks: beef, chicken, and vegetable. One day, I hope to be a bouillonaire” are related “stock” jokes.

Wikipedia: Broth
Broth, also known as bouillon, is a savory liquid made of water in which bones, meat, or vegetables have been simmered. It can be eaten alone, but it is most commonly used to prepare other dishes, such as soups, gravies, and sauces.

Commercially prepared liquid broths are available, typically chicken, beef, fish, and vegetable varieties. Dehydrated broth in the form of bouillon cubes were commercialized beginning in the early 20th century.

Do you ever have a moment you type the words:
“I went to buy broth but they were out of stock.”
and it makes you stop and wonder how you became such a misanthrope?
