“I keep randomly shouting out ‘Broccoli’ and ‘Cauliflower’—I think I might have florets”

“Florets” sounds a bit like “Tourette’s,” and there have been jokes. “@funnyhumour i cant stop shouting and swearing whenever brocolli or cauliflower are on the menu. Florets Syndrome is a terrible condition!” was posted on Twitter by chatty on March 4, 2011. “I can’t stop eating cauliflower. I must be suffering from florets syndrome” was posted on Twitter by Wren154 on January 31, 2012.

Swedish comedian Olaf Falafel told this joke at the 2019 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where it won the “Funniest Joke of The Fringe” award:

“I keep randomly shouting out ‘Broccoli’ and ‘Cauliflower’—I think I might have florets.”

“What did the cauliflower bank robber say to the broccoli getaway driver?”/“Floret” is another “floret” joke. “I keep shouting out the names of castles.  I think I’ve got Turrets” is a related Tourette’s syndrome joke.

Edinburgh Fringe: Tourette’s charity wants apology over award-winning joke
By Alice Evans
19 August 2019
A charity for people with Tourette’s syndrome has asked a comedian to apologise for his award-winning joke made at the Edinburgh Fringe festival.

Tourettes Action said it was “so disappointed” by Swedish comedian Olaf Falafel’s gag, which won Dave’s “Funniest Joke of The Fringe” prize.

It said the fact the public voted for the joke showed “how we as a nation deal with people who are different”.

A comedian said she was “tired” of her condition being used as a punchline.
