“I have never been hurt by what I have not said”

“I have never been hurt by what I have not said” and “I have never been hurt by anything I didn’t say” have both been printed on many images. The saying (with several forms) has been credited to Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933), who was governor of Massachusetts 1919-1921, vice president of the United States 1921- 1923, and president 1923-1929.

“In considering whether he (Calvin Coolidge—ed.) should include a particular sentence in an address he was heard to say as he ran his pen through it, ‘I don’t remember to have been hurt by anything I didn’t say’” was written by William Howard Taft in the Washington (DC) Post on January 3, 1920. “Coolidge’s principle is, ‘I have never been hurt by what I have not said,’ but he has said some things” was printed in The Vermont Standard (Woodstock, VT), from the Boston (MA) Transcript, on August 5, 1920. “‘I have never been hurt by anything I didn’t say.’—Calvin Coolidge” was printed in Public Opinion (Chambersburg, PA) on January 31, 1920.

Wikipedia: Calvin Coolidge
Calvin Coolidge (born John Calvin Coolidge Jr.; /ˈkuːlɪdʒ/; July 4, 1872 – January 5, 1933) was the 30th president of the United States from 1923 to 1929. Born in Vermont, Coolidge was a Republican lawyer from New England who climbed up the ladder of Massachusetts state politics, eventually becoming the state’s 48th governor. His response to the Boston Police Strike of 1919 thrust him into the national spotlight as a man of decisive action. Coolidge was elected the country’s 29th vice president the next year, succeeding the presidency upon the sudden death of President Warren G. Harding in 1923.

Gov. Coolidge was born in Vermont, and is what they describe in that State as “a safe man.” He is a lawyer who has devoted much time to the State. He was a most useful legislator and has made an admirable Governor of Massachusetts. he is a man of few words, but of wise, courageous action.

At a conference of the New England Governors in Maine in 1923, one of them irreverently and crudely slapped him on the back and said: “Good morning, old chatter-box.” Serenely he replied, simply: “I have never been hurt by what I have not said.”

The late Calvin Coolidge is credited with the aphorism: “I have never been hurt by what I have not said.” However, that is different from the experience of most others who have often been wrecked by not saying “No!”
