“I don’t get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day”

“We don’t wake up for less than $10,000 a day” is what supermodel Linda Evangelista said in Vogue, “Pretty Women,” by Jonathan Van Meter, October 1990. Evangelista was joking, talking about herself and fellow model Christy Turlington “I feel like those words are going to be engraved on my tombstone,” Evangelista told Vogue in September 2001.

“We don’t wake up for less than $10,000 a day” became “I don’t wake up for less than $10,000 a day’ and “I don’t get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day” in various versions of the quotation. The money amount changes and the quote is often said by others for comic effect. For example, a low-salaried worker might joke, “I don’t get out of bed for less than seven dollars an hour.”

We have this expression, Christy and I: We don’t wake up for less than $10,000 a day.
. Spoken in Vogue (1990) to Jonathan Van Meter, talking about money and how she and a few other models were calling the shots and changing the game: Christy refers to supermodel Christy Turlington
. Often misquoted as: “We don’t get out of bed for less than…” or “I don’t get out of bed for less than…”

I feel like those words are going to be engraved on my tombstone. It was brought up every single time I did an interview. I apologized for it; I acknowledged it; I said it was true; I said it was a joke. Do I regret it? I used to regret. Not anymore. I don’t regret anything anymore. Would I hope that I would never say something like that ever again? Yes. Am I capable of saying something like that again? I hope not.

October: Featured alongside Turlington in “Pretty Women,” Jonathan Van Meter’s profile on the top models and best friends; Evangelista jokingly utters what will become one of the most famous phrases in the fashion world: “We don’t wake up for less than $10,000 a day.” The comment—once described as the “Let them eat cake” of the twentieth century—triggers a backlash against Evangelista and the Trinity, “until it drove the whole supermodel train right off the tracks,” Van Meter will later note. “I feel like those words are going to be engraved on my tombstone,”[17] Evangelista later says.

I don’t get out of bed for less than, like, $10 or the promise of a decent sandwich a day.

Today was the first time that I said the phrase “I don’t get out of bed for things like that”, with zero sarcastic connotation.
