“I thought a flautist was an expert in flautas”

“Flauta” (Spanish for “flute”) is a Mexican dish.  There are, of course, jokes involving flute players, or “flautists.”
 
“Why are people who play the flute called flautists? Those should be people who make flautas” was posted on X/Twitter by Fevin Kik on January 24, 2014. “I THOUGHT A FLAUTIST WAS AN EXPERT IN FLAUTAS” (shown on a restaurant sign) was posted on Facebook by El Arroyo on March 11, 2025.

The filled tortilla is then shallow-fried or deep-fried.The dish is often topped with condiments such as sour cream and guacamole. Corn tortillas are generally used to make taquitos. The dish is more commonly known as flautas when they are larger than their taquito counterparts, and can be made with either flour or corn tortillas.

FYI: A person who plays the flute is called a flautist.
The crispy delicious Mexican dish that is a fried flour tortilla filled with meat, cheese, maybe beans, salsa, and topped with sour cream and guacamole is called a flauta, the Spanish word for flute.
