“I remember the spoon’s taste more than the ice cream” (wooden spoon of ice cream cups)

Children at school or at camp are (or were) often given a cup of ice cream with a small wood “spoon” to eat it with. The ice cream spoon now is also made with plastic.

On this date in 1958, John H. Mulholland, who invented the wooden spoon used in ice cream containers for many years, died. Mulholland was an Irish immigrant whose initial career was in advertising. He became friends with the president of Breyer’s Ice Cream while working in that field. He moved to Delaware and discovered that the tin spoons used to eat ice cream had a metallic taste and sharp edges. He learned the art of woodworking and found that sweet gum trees, which were plentiful in Milford, were perfect for the laminating process to create wooden spoons. He and his sons built a manufacturing plant in Milford and Mulholland used his Breyer’s connection to promote his company. He also built a fishing lodge on Haven Lake, inviting ice cream moguls to spend a weekend fishing where he often sealed deals with them.
