Houston Roll (sushi)
Various Japanese restaurants in Houston and throughout the country have offered sushi called a “Houston Roll.” The ingredients are not standard, but it most popularly includes tuna, cream cheese and jalapeño wrapped in soy paper. The “Houston roll” has been offered since at least the 1990s.

Not the East Coast, but here in Houston at Kaneyama, a Houston Roll is Yellowtail, Tuna and Salmon (yum!!).

Many of the rolls are given names by the particular restaurant. I learned that what one place calls a Houston roll (here in Houston) is totally different than what another places gives the same name. So my recommendation is to read the menu, and if doesn’t say exactly what the ingredients are, ask.

From the regular menu, I tried a simple Houston Roll of yellowtail seasoned with green onion, and it was perfectly fine, but it had none of the startling immediacy of the toro or the live scallop.

What I learned today…
Some sushi is wrapped in soy paper, not seaweed.
Jason and I had an awesome sushi lunch at Kona Grill in Scottsdale Fashion Square. We tried several different types of sushi but the one I liked best was called a “Houston Roll”. It was tuna, cream cheese and jalapeño wrapped in soy paper. The soy paper was bright yellow and moist. It had a consistency similar to seaweed, but no flavor at all really. I loved the flavors mixed together with the crisp crunch and bite of the jalapeño pepper slice. Yum! I love sushi!
