“Honesty is not only morally right, it’s also highly efficient”

“Honesty is not only morally right, it’s also highly efficient” is a popular saying that has been printed on a sign. Randy Pausch (1960-2008), a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, was diagnosed with having pancreatic cancer in September 2006; he was given a terminal diagnosis in August 2007. In September 2007, Pausch’s “The Last Lecture” (later printed in a 2008 book) included:

“Honesty is not only morally right, it’s also efficient. In a culture where everyone tells the truth, you can save a lot of time double-checking.”

Pausch’s quotation on honesty has been reprinted on many websites. Many Jimmy John’s sandwich shops have the sign with Pausch’s message.

Wikipedia: Randy Pausch
Randolph Frederick “Randy” Pausch (October 23, 1960 – July 25, 2008) was an American professor of computer science and human-computer interaction and design at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Pausch learned that he had pancreatic cancer in September 2006, and in August 2007 he was given a terminal diagnosis: “3 to 6 months of good health left”. He gave an upbeat lecture titled “The Last Lecture: Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams” on September 18, 2007, at Carnegie Mellon, which became a popular YouTube video and led to other media appearances. He then co-authored a book called The Last Lecture on the same theme, which became a New York Times best-seller.

Honesty is Highly Efficient
March 23, 2011
I was in a Jimmy John’s sandwich shop the other day and I saw a sign that said:  Honesty is not only morally right, it’s also highly efficient.  I like that.  I think it’s very true.  From personal relationships to business meetings to interviews to project delivery methodology – honesty is highly efficient.  So is direct communication.
