“Homes are where jobs go at night”

More jobs means more housing, and fewer jobs means fewer homes. “Homes (or “housing” or “real estate”) is where (the) jobs go at night” is a popular saying of unknown authorship. “Too often people forget that homes are where jobs go at night” was printed in the Star Tribune (Minneapolis, MN) on January 7, 2000. “As someone recently quipped, ‘Houses are where jobs go at night’” was printed in The Reporter (Fond Du Lac, WI) on March 25, 2001.

“At the time I worked with Alan Kingston, who was with Workforce Housing and coined the phrase ‘housing is where jobs go at night’” was printed in Los Angeles (CA) Downtown News on February 23, 2004. It’s not known if Alan Kingston coined the saying because it’s not known when he first said this.

“Real estate is where the JOBS go at night” was posted on Twitter by J. Massey on December 20, 2013. “Real estate is where the jobs go at night. Directly proportional” was posted on Twitter by Christina Haftman on March 11, 2014.
