“Home sweet home office”

“Home sweet home office” is a work saying that has been printed on many images. The saying is based on the song “Home Sweet Home” that John Howard Payne (1791-1852) wrote for the opera Clari, the Maid of Milan (1823).

“Home, Sweet Home Office” was used in 1916 in London to describe relatives of enlisted men being pressed into work. “Home, sweet, home office”—referring to a home office for work—was printed in The Record (Hackensack, NJ) on March 12, 1990.

Similar work-related sayings include “Cubicle sweet cubicle,” “Home sweet office” and “Office sweet office.”

LONDON, Dec. 30.—(Special correspondence).—In many government offices where women are engaged temporarily to fill the places of clerks who have enlisted, preference is given to relations of the absent men.

Kinship to civil servants over military age, or otherwise ineligible for military service, also is an advantage, other things being equal, and sisters, cousins, nieces and aunts are being mobilized in great numbers. Indeed, one very important department in which the family element is very pronounced is now referred to in the service as the “Home, Sweet Home Office.”
