Hispandering (Hispanic + pandering)
“Hispandering” (Hispanic + pandering) occurs when a someone (such as a politician) panders to a Spanish-speaking constituency. The politician might produce election literature half in English and half in Spanish, advertise on Spanish-language television, be photographed doing Spanish dances, and so on.
The blogger Mickey Kaus popularized the term “Hispandering” in his Kausfiles on the online magazine Slate in July 2002. However, “Hispandering” has been cited online since at least July 20, 2001, when it was used in The Federalist(r) Digest (The Conservative e-Journal of Record).
The similar term of “spandering” (Spanish-speaker pandering) has been cited in print since at least 2008.

Quote of the week…
>From the “Hispandering” File: “The president, who never misses an
opportunity to demonstrate that his Spanish is better than his English and who only last month ordered the Navy and Marines off their bombing range in Puerto Rico, is trying now to figure out a way to grant legal status to millions of illegal Mexicans without countenancing contempt for the law. ...George W., perhaps with an excess of conservative compassion, is unwilling to risk inviting new immigrants here on terms that would be fair to everyone, new immigrants most of all. He could begin by insisting that illegal Mexicans obey the law and learn the language as a condition of staying. By encouraging them to adhere to old-country customs and language, however much fun it may be to show off border-bordello linguistic skills, he dooms them to lonely isolation with scant hope of climbing out of a miserable ghetto of penury and cultural poverty. Such is the price of the pander.”

GOP Can’t Win Great Hispandering Competition

Never let it be said that the Democrats will allow the Republicans to out-pander them for the Hispanic vote.

If it’s more reasons why the feeble efforts of Republicans to pander to Hispanics won’t fetch more Hispanic votes you want, listen to what the chieftains of the Hispanic lobby themselves had to say last week, after their grand powwow at the national convention of the Hispanic racist group, the National Council of La Raza, wound down in Miami.

Worse, even the Latino bloc isn’t really a bloc. Republican leaders don’t know much about minorities many of the few Hispanics the GOP leaders talk to are political consultants hoping to import more foreign Hispanics into our country to make their own services look more needed so they tend to come up with ways to “Hispander” (as Slate’s Mickey Kaus calls it) that are both cynical and stupid.

Obama should quit ‘Hispandering’
By ESTHER J. CEPEDA

Little else brings me as much joy as learning a new word — especially if it perfectly captures the spirit of the moment.
“Hispandering” — isn’t that great?
I can’t believe I’d never seen the term before, though a quick check on Urban Dictionary informed me it’s been around since at least 2008. It means, as you may have guessed, political pandering to Hispanics. Roll it around on your tongue a bit — it appropriately sounds similar to “hypocrisy.”
I discovered this gem a few days ago in a delightful blog post, Are Latinos Getting Clowned by Obama?, on the website politic365.com. The article illuminated the disappointment some of the more serious Hispanic voters and community leaders feel about President Obama enlisting the likes of George Lopez and Eva Longoria to help spread the message among Latinos for his re-election effort.

Esai Morales: Romney’s ‘Hispandering’
By CAITLIN MCDEVITT
4/30/12 10:38 AM EDT
Actor Esai Morales ripped Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney for pandering to Hispanic voters during an appearance on “Face the Nation” on Sunday.
“We call that Hispandering,” Morales, best known for his role in “La Bamba,” said in the interview taped last week. “…The problem is that, you know, with Romney, he’s says his grandparents or his father was born in Mexico. I surprised I’m not seeing him, you know, in a photo op outside of a taco stand.”
