Hipsturbia (hipster +suburbia)
“Hipsturbia” (hipster + suburbia) was popularized in the New York (NY) Times on February 18, 2013, in “Creating Hipsturbia” by Alex Williams. Hipsters in places such as Williamsburg, Brooklyn, were having kids and moving to places like Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. The suburbs around New York City had become “hipsturbia.”
“Hipsturbia” had been previously used as the title of a 2010 short comedy film about hipsters. “A dispatch from Hipsturbia. RT Hudson River Valley Draws Brooklynites” was posted on Twitter on August 5, 2011, referencing very similar Times story that month called “Williamsburg on the Hudson.”

My latest short film, a short comedy about hipsters and the fools who date them:
‘Hipsturbia’
This was produced for the Baltimore City Paper 2nd annual Shoot.Film.Baltimore contest. It screened last Wednesday here in town. It was a Top Ten finalist out of 40 films submitted and we came 2nd on the Audience award. Just a funny little something-something for you to enjoy. I’m not all about the horror, though most assume I am

Creating Hipsturbia
By ALEX WILLIAMS
Published: February 15, 2013
A yoga studio opened on Main Street that offers lunch-hour vinyasa classes. Nearby is a bicycle store that sells Dutch-style bikes, and a farm-to-table restaurant that sources its edible nasturtiums from its backyard garden.
Across the street is the home-décor shop that purveys monofloral honey produced by nomadic beekeepers in Sicily. And down the street is a retro-chic bakery, where the red-velvet cupcakes are gluten-free and the windows are decorated with bird silhouettes — the universal symbol for “hipsters welcome.”
You no longer have to take the L train to experience this slice of cosmopolitan bohemia. Instead, you’ll find it along the Metro-North Railroad, roughly 25 miles north of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in the suburb of Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.

Same As It Ever Was: Hipsters Move to the Suburbs, Fancy Themselves Pioneers
BY KIM VELSEY 2/19/13 4:08PM

Young families have been moving to the suburbs for as long as there have been young families and suburbs. That many of the young families moving to New York suburbs should be Brooklynites, and that many of them should fancy themselves “creative types” and that they, like their parents and grandparents before them, should believe themselves capable of bringing their superior sensibilities to the land of compromises and comfort should come as no surprise. See: Revolutionary Road.
And yet, the New York Times has seen fit to print yet another style section feature on the suburban exodus of Brooklynites called, what else, “Creating Hipsturbia.” After all, “Williamsburg on the Hudson” ran way back in August 2011.
