“Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard”

“Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard” (or “Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard”) is a popular sports saying that has been printed on many posters. The earliest citations of the saying come from hockey. “I think Rudy Pilous once told me that hard work beats talent unless talent works” was cited in 1981. Rudy Pilous (1914-1994) was a Canadian ice hockey player and Stanley Cup-winning coach.

“There may be people who have more talent than you do, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do,” from New York Yankee Derek Jeter, is a related saying.
