“Happiness equals reality minus expectations”
“Happiness equals reality minus expectations” was printed in the book Why Marriage? (1974) by Edward E. Ford and Robert L. Zorn. Authorship of the saying is unknown. If there are low expectations, they are likely to occur, and people will be happy with “success.”
Tom Magliozzi (1937-2014), of the NPR weekly radio show Car Talk, said “Happiness equals reality minus expectations” by at least 1995, and also on several other occasions.

Thomas Louis Magliozzi (June 28, 1937 – November 3, 2014) and his brother Raymond Francis Magliozzi (born March 30, 1949) were the co-hosts of NPR’s weekly radio show Car Talk, where they were known as “Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers”.

Here’s one element in reduction of the divorce rate: follow the philosophy of the great Magliacci brothers (of NPR “Car Talk” fame). A woman called them up a while back with some complaints about her very old Honda. They told her, in effect, that she shouldn’t expect so much from her car. One of the brothers, I forget which, said “Happiness equals reality minus expectations.” In other words, if your expectations exceed reality, you’re certain to be unhappy. In my view, this applies to marriages, as well as old Hondas.

I’m a fan of NPR’s Car Talk, in part because the Magliazzi brothers have sensible things to say about life, as well as about cars. A while back a woman called in about some problems she was having with her very old Honda. One of the Magliazzis told her essentially that she couldn’t expect much from such an old car. He said that “happiness equals reality minus expectations,” meaning that if your expectations exceed reality, you will be unhappy. I think that’s a good basis for marriage as well as for cars.
