Handwich (hand + sandwich)

“Handwich” (hand + sandwich) is a term that various eating establishments have given to their food. “Handwich” has been infrequently used and the food items are not standard. “And the fist-sized ‘handwiches,’ which are either ham and cheese or roast beef and onions stuffed in a pocket of fresh-baked bread, are filling and satisfying” was cited in print in 1987. Disney World served “handwiches” since at least 1989.

The Exo Cafe in Forest Hills, Queens, serves handwiches. As described in a 2013 restaurent review:

“Starting with freshly baked ciabatta bread, the Exo Handwich is generously filled with freshly grilled chicken breast, red roasted peppers, creamy goat cheese, field greens and roasted garlic sauce.”

Reva’s “Home of the Handwich” Inc. of Ashland City, Tennessee, trademarked “Handwich” with a first use from November 8, 1993.

Exo Café’s dinner menu includes freshly tossed salads, unique burgers and their famous “handwiches” as they are aptly called, since you’ll need both hands to handle these generously sized sandwiches. Starting with freshly baked ciabatta bread, the Exo Handwich is generously filled with freshly grilled chicken breast, red roasted peppers, creamy goat cheese, field greens and roasted garlic sauce. My companion and I made short work of the chimmichurri handwich which was filled with tender, grilled, sliced steak that’s been rubbed with special spices, then topped with provolone cheese, tomato and chimmichurri sauce made from parsley, garlic and vinegar for a unique flavor sensation ($11.95). Next time I’ll try the fried fish handwich composed of crispy, beerbattered cod, lettuce, tomato and tartar sauce. All handwiches are served with your choice of their Belgian fries, fabulous onion rings or green salad.

New Details on David Burke’s Bacon Bar
Friday, May 17, 2013, by Daniel Gerzina

The menu is being whittled down to a selection of eight bacon-centric sandwiches and a couple desserts. In between sliders and full sandwiches, Burke says he has coined the phrase “handwiches” to describe them. He expects three of them to fill patrons up; they’ll cost $3-4 each. He mentions an updated lobster roll, a Peking duck sandwich, a Spam sandwich, and a Mexican BLT on tortilla with spicy Mexican bacon.
