Hamdog (hamburger + hot dog)

A “hamdog” is a combination of a hamburger and a hot dog. Mark Murray of Perth (Australia) patented and also trademarked “hamdog,” which he says was invented in 2004. A hot dog is inserted in a specially cut hamburger, and the special roll is a cross between a hot dog roll and a hamburger bun. Murray’s version of the “hamdog” received much media coverage in 2016.

Chandler Goff of Mulligan’s (Decatur, GA) sold a different “hamdog” in 2005. This “hamdog” is a hot dog wrapped in ground beef and deep fried, topped with chili, cheese, onions and a fried egg, and served on a hoagie roll.

Created in November 2004 by Mark Murray., a hamdog as described in it’s United States Patent, is “a combination hamburger and hot dog bread bun”. It contains a beef patty cut in two, with a frankfurter placed in between the two patties. Then topped off with cheese, pickles, sauces, tomato, lettuce and onion.

Variations
Mark Murray’s creation predates a product using the Hamdog name that is sold by Mulligan’s Bar USA as what they refer to as a hamdog, in addition to the Luther Burger, a bacon cheeseburger with Krispy Kreme donuts as its bun. Their version of the hamdog consists of the usual hotdog and beef patty, but is topped with chili, cheese, onions, a fried egg, and two fistfulls of French fries, all served on a hoagie roll. These two dishes were among the attractions of the bar.

Some chefs will forever be associated with their most famous creations. Wolfgang Puck and his smoked salmon pizza. Jean-Georges Vongerichten and his molten-center chocolate cake. Chandler Goff and his Hamdog.

Hamdog?

Two months ago, Goff, the owner of a grubby Decatur pool hall called Mulligan’s, stepped onto the world culinary stage with his gift to human civilization: a hot dog padded with sliced cheese and a half pound of hamburger, dropped in the deep fryer, bedded like the reclining Olympia on a hoagie roll, then lavished with chili, bacon, onions and a fried egg. The Hamdog.

And this begat the Mulligan’s of Georgia Hamdog (a hot dog wrapped in a beef patty, deep-fried, covered with chili, cheese and onions, served on a hoagie bun and topped by a fried egg and two fistfuls of fries).

THE EXPERIENCE: Owner Chandler Goff likes getting radical in the kitchen. He’s the co-inventor of the Hamdog, a hot dog wrapped in ground beef and deep fried, topped with chili, cheese, onions and a fried egg, and served on a hoagie roll. His other claim to fame is a bit more simple, but no less wacky. The Luther Burger is a bacon cheeseburger sandwiched between a Krispy Kreme doughnut that’s been sliced in half.

DECATUR, GA. - Looking to incorporate more healthful foods into your diet? If so, you may want to rethink a visit to Mulligan’s restaurant here.

According to a report on the website http://www.newsoftheweird.com, the menu’s specialties include the “Hamdog,” a half-pound hamburger wrapped around a hot dog that is deep fried and served on a hoagie. The hefty sandwich is topped with chili, bacon and a fried egg.

So what is the Hamdog? It consists of the traditional circular beef mince patty between two layers of bread, typically in the form of a sesame seed bun. But that is where the parallels with a normal burger end.

The Hamdog is cut straight down the middle into two equal semi-circles, allowing the frankfurter to slip neatly between. The bun itself, rather than being circular, is made in a special mould which gives it a distinctive shape akin to a flying saucer or, form some angles, a Viking horned helmet.

Inventor Mark Murray said he had the idea back in 2004 while vacationing with his wife in Nashville.

“I grabbed a burger and a hot dog as I was really hungry. I was sitting in the car eating them both at the same time and my wife was looking at me like I was an idiot,” Mark Murray told CNBC.

The Verge scoured Google Patents and tracked down Murray’s 2009 documentation for a “Combination hamburger and hotdog bread bun.”
