Gunset Park (Sunset Park)

Sunset Park (Brooklyn) had high crime rates in the 1980s and 1990s; a gang named “Gunset” existed in 1995. The Sunset Park nickname of “Gunset Park” appears to date from this period of gun-related crime. Although crimes rates have decreased in Sunset Park, the nickname is still sometimes used.

Wikipedia: Sunset Park, Brooklyn
Sunset Park is a neighborhood in the western section of the New York City borough of Brooklyn, USA. It bounded by 36th Street (along the southern end of the Green-Wood Cemetery) and Greenwood Heights (referred to as “Greenwood” by Brooklyn Community Board 7) on the north, 9th Avenue, and Borough Park on the east, 65th Street and Bay Ridge on the south and Upper New York Bay on the west. Sunset Park is patrolled by the NYPD’s 72nd Precinct.

There is a namesake city park within the neighborhood, located between 41st and 44th Streets and 5th and 7th Avenues, which is the second highest point in Brooklyn (for the highest point in Brooklyn, see the Green-Wood Cemetery entry). The hilly terrain of the park affords visitors magnificent views of Downtown Brooklyn and the Brooklyn Bridge, Lower Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, Staten Island and New Jersey beyond. The “main drag” of the neighborhood lies along Fifth Avenue. The area is also home to the Jackie Gleason Bus Depot.

Officially, Crime Is Dropping, But Brooklyn Is Still Worried

“I have got so tired of hearing about statistics,” said one 32-year-old mother of three who has spent her entire life in Sunset Park, but asked that she remain anonymous. “What we hear are gunshots—gunshots at 7:30 in the morning as we put clothes on our children.”

Much of the gunfire has been linked to youth gangs, whose numbers, the police say, are multiplying monthly and whose names seem to change almost weekly. There are the Latin Kings, the Netas, Dominicans Don’t Play, Gunset, Roughneck Soldiers and United To Crime.

A personal favorite is “Motherless Child” with the video with the spliced in scenes from that glorious Rhea Perlman classic, “Sunset Park”. Pretty hilarious how when I was in Brooklyn Tech High School, I heard all about how bad Sunset Park was - they called it “Gunset Park”!!!!

An Afternoon in Gunset
Brooklyn will always be Brooklyn. I just want to put that out there for anyone who has been wondering about the fate of the lower 718.

It’s very “in” right now to decry modern-day gentrification (which I believe McCain supporters also refer to as “Neighborhood first”) and all its inherent evils. Everyone seems to think that outside of Manhattan, souls are getting sold alongside mix tapes. However, don’t tell that to the homeless woman I saw the other day on the corner of 4th Avenue and 51st Street in Sunset Park (which I believe the locals once referred to as “Gunset Park”). Yes, the streets are safer.

There is no way Necro can play off saying the n-word by justifying it with his environment, as there are barely any black people in his neighborhood. Fact. I lived in Sunset Park, Brooklyn for years myself. At “best” (e.g. most hood part of the area), he is surrounded by Puerto Ricans and Dominicans; if not, he either lives in the Chinese part or also possibly in the orthodox Jewish area. Though the area does have its shady blocks and the park is a bad place at night, Gunset Park my ass, poser.
