“Grow your own dope—plant a politician”

“Grow your own dope—plant a politician” is a jocular saying; Google Images shows that many variations of the saying have been printed on T-shirts and bumper stickers. The earliest variations of the saying have been cited from Australia in the early 1980s. “Grow your own dope, plant a unionist” was cited in 1981 in a Melbourne newspaper, “grow your own dope, plant a Victorian” was cited in 1982 in a Melbourne newspaper and “Grow your own dope—plant a Pom” was cited in 1982 in a Sydney newspaper.

“Grow your own dope—plant a man” was cited in print in 1991 and has been, perhaps, the most popular variation. “Grow your own dope — plant a politician” was cited in print in 2002.
