Wikipedia: Grilled cheese
A grilled cheese (or toasted sandwich) is a hot sandwich typically prepared by heating one or more slices of cheese between slices of bread, with a cooking fat such as butter, on a frying pan, griddle, or sandwich toaster, until the bread browns and the cheese melts. A grilled cheese may contain ingredients besides the bread and cheese, as long as the latter is the main focus.

The reason grilled cheese with tomato soup is so good is because it’s deconstructed cheese pizza. That’s why.

Well…yes and no. Tomato soup typically doesn’t feature so many herbs and spices as pizza sauce. Mozzarella isn’t particularly common to see used in grilled cheese sandwiches either, though it works wonderfully.

Why is grilled cheese always coupled with tomato soup? (self.grilledcheese)

Are just suited well with each other as accompanying tastes, is there a classic/historic reason behind it or am I supposed to ‘dunk’ my grilled cheese into the soup?

I think the only real reason is because it’s fucking delicious. And yeah you have to dunk that thing. Lol

It’s always been a staple here in the south. Campbell’s tomato is the go to soup imo. Try it out man!

It may not be the true answer but my favorite explanation is that grilled cheese and tomato soup is essentially a deconstructed pizza and everyone loves pizza. I find it hard to argue with that.
