“Google before you tweet is the new think before you speak”
“Think before you speak” is an old proverb that has been cited in print since at least the 17th century. “Think before you tweet” is a social media proverb that has been cited in print since at least April 2007.
“Google before you tweet is the new think before you speak” is a jocular saying that has been printed on many gift items, such as buttons and posters. “Google” means to look something up in a search engine. The poster has been sold by I Love Typography since at least February 2010 and was designed by Joe Newton, with words by Jonathan Parker. “Google before you post is the new think before you speak” (with “post” replacing “tweet”) is a less-used form of the saying.

Think before you Tweet

While I do not know PC Magazine editor Jim Louderback personally, I have long subscribed to an email newsletter version of his “blog” which, in his case, is a blog-version of his email newsletter. Today, Jim (or someone posing as Jim) guest-blogged on the PR-blog, Strumpette.com to respond to a Twitter “tweet” made by Steve Rubel last Friday.

I think instead of “think before you speak” I should invest time in “Google before you type” - although that would be tricky since you have to type in order to Google so…..... never mind!

Lisa Buyer of The Buyer Group discussed using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and company blogs for PR purposes as well as social branding opportunities. She says LinkedIn is good for corporate groups.
Twitter works well for online branding. You can have both a personal account and a brand account, but watch out for irresponsible employees on Twitter, because as she says, “Twitter news travels fast.”
Your company should have a policy on social media for employee use. Talk with employees about their social media use, and create an action plan for reputation management. Buyer offers these three social media lessons:
- Think before you tweet
- Avoid gossip
- Use Google Alerts
