“Good help is hard to find”
According to modern accounts, some slaveholders after the Emancipation Proclamation or after the Civil War refused to give up their slaves, stating “good help is hard to find.” This story has appeared since at least 2004, with the slaveholder being Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885). There is no documentary evidence that this is true. “Good help is hard to find” has not been found cited in the 19th century. “He says his corn needs plowing and that kind of good man is hard to find at this time” was cited in print in 1919.
The saying ‘hard to find” has been popularized since the 1920s. The song “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” was written by Eddie Green and popularized by the singer Bessie Smith in 1927; the book A Good Man Is Hard to Find (1955) by Flannery O’Connor borrowed the song’s title. “Good help is hard to find” began appearing with frequency in print starting in the 1950s.
