“From sewer to brewer”

“From sewer to brewer” is a concept that was developed at the University of Ghent in Belgium in 2015. Waste water is processed to make beer.

Ghent University brews beer with wastewater
( 26-08-2015 ) UGent’ers of the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering have wastewater brewed a tasty blond beer with high fermentation.
The Faculty of Bio-engineering sciences from the University of Ghent brewed a special beer to mark the first global conference on the reuse of raw materials from aqueous streams, which takes place on September 1 in Ghent in the presence of provincial governor Jan Briers. Inspired by the researchers used the focus of the convention is not as usual tap water, but water from the brewery was purified and used as brewing water. The result is a delicious blond high fermentation beer.

Brewing beer on the occasion of a conference is not new to the organizers, but brewing beer with waste water though. “So we gave last year already self-designed bottle of beer to the participants of a conference on the mathematical modeling of water purification. Because the Congress this time specifically deals with reuse of materials from aqueous streams, we wanted to go a step further, “says Professor Ingmar Nopens, president of Environmental Science and Technology Centre of the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering.

Belgian scientists make novel water-from-urine machine
A team of scientists at a Belgian university say they have created a machine that turns urine into drinkable water and fertilizer using solar energy, a technique which could be applied in rural areas and developing countries.

While there are other options for treating waste water, the system applied at the University of Ghent uses a special membrane, is said to be energy-efficient and to be applicable in areas off the electricity grid.

“We can make the best beer in the world starting from urine,” said Denis De Wilde, a brewer in Ghent, Belgium, who used a special machine to extract clean water from urine and then turn that water into a lager dubbed “From Sewer to Brewer.”

Here’s how it works:

The urine is collected in a tank and heated in a solar-powered boiler. As the water evaporates, it passes through a membrane that filters out the remaining nutrients from the liquid.
