“Free men are not equal and equal men are not free”

“For the inequality of man, since equal men are not free and free men are not equal” and “Equal men are not free and free men are not equal” were both said by conservative author and speaker Thomas J. Anderson (1910-2002) in November 1960 and April 1961, respectively. “Free men are not equal; and equal men are not free”—perhaps the more popular form of the saying—was credited to Tom Anderson in The Conservative Political Action Handbook (1962).

The saying expands upon “All men are created equal” in the U.S. Declaration of Independence (1776). The conservative argument is that all people should have equal opportunity under law, but that equality of outcome should not be a public policy. Some people are better than other people and certain things; everyone has different talents. A government that seeks equality of income, for example, is a government in a society where people are not free.

Later life
He remained active in conservative politics, notably as a council member of the John Birch Society and was widely popular as a speaker, appearing on various TV and radio programs and delivering more than 1,500 speeches between 1947 and 1994.

He was known for a great sense of humor: in some circles he was called “a modern-day Will Rogers,” in others “the barefoot wit of the John Birch Society.”

Thomas Jefferson said All men are created equal…but we are all different! We are equal in only in 3 ways-before the law, in our rights and before God. Outside of that we are absolutely different! Talents, income, hobbies, tastes, looks, abilities, and on…in a free society we are all not equal.
